Note: The fresh lemony scent of May Chang (aka Litsea), is much like lemongrass, without the harsh note. It is soft and clear, and its aroma is so loved throughout the world that it has been used in many perfumes, cosmetics, and body care products.

In natural perfumery, May Chang essential oil is used in making floral blends, colognes, citrus blends, and to scent soaps and body care products. It blends well with tree oils such as spruce, pines, and eucalyptuses, with florals, citruses, and many herbal aromas.


Observations and Anecdotal Information

May Chang essential oil is a very popular aroma. It is uplifting and stimulating in cases of fatigue and exhaustion, yet calming and sedating in cases of anxiety, insomnia. Emotionally and energetically, May Chang essential oil is cleansing. It clears molds, bacteria, and noxious odors from the environment. It is somewhat cooling, and has a euphoric effect on many people. Inhaling its aroma soothes the nervous system and calms emotions, having a cleansing effect on negative emotional energy.


The aroma of May Chang is such that it will improve the aroma of more medicinal smelling oils; and just a few drops will improve almost any blend, as it blends well with so many oils.


It has many medicinal properties, including:

  • Anti-tumoral (possibly effective in arresting the growth of lung cancer cells when diffused, according to an article published in PLoS One Journal)
  • Bronchodilator, opens breathing passages
  • Pain relief
  • Heart tonic; balances the heart meridian, aids high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, reduces cholesterol
  • Reduces oily skin, helps acne, fungal infections, dermatitis
  • Strengthens the digestive system; helps ulcers, nausea, flatulence, indigestion
